The Simple Bike Alignment Tool I Built Using My Phone Camera
One thing I’ve always struggled with when building or adjusting a bike is aligning the front wheel and stem perfectly straight. Even when it looks correct at first, I often notice the handlebars are slightly off once I start riding.
Over the years, I’ve used different methods:
It always worked eventually, but the process was frustrating and inconsistent.
Recently, I came up with a simple idea using my phone camera.
The way it works is simple: I position the phone above the stem and use the camera preview with overlay guide lines. The horizontal line helps align the handlebars, while the vertical line helps line up the front wheel and stem together.
From that camera angle, it becomes surprisingly easy to see even a small misalignment immediately.
Instead of guessing from different viewpoints, I now have a consistent reference every time:
That simple setup makes stem alignment much faster and more accurate.
I originally built this tool just for myself because I work on my bikes frequently for training and racing. But after using it a few times, I realized it could actually be useful for other cyclists and home mechanics too.
It’s not meant to replace professional bike fitting tools. The goal is simply to make one annoying part of bike setup easier using something everyone already has in their pocket — a phone camera.
Sometimes the best ideas come from solving small everyday frustrations.
